<p>My identity is at the core of everything I create, not just the jokes or the lifestyle content, but the perspective behind it. Being gay has given me a sharp sense of humor, but also a deep understanding of what it means to be different and still show up unapologetically. I use comedy to connect, but underneath that is a very real desire to create space for people like me to feel seen and celebrated.</p>

<p>One of the biggest moments was realizing that the more I leaned into who I really am the more authentic and honest I was in my content the more people tuned in. It was freeing. There’s something powerful about not hiding anymore, and once I stopped performing for acceptance and just started showing up as myself, everything changed, both creatively and personally. I saw this in my first viral series “How to Be Iconic” where I gave relationship advice in a dress and heels walking on a treadmill. It sounded absurd but people related to that feeling of being iconic regardless of how people perceive you.</p>

<p>When I was younger, Pride used to be a really scary time for me. I hadn’t come out yet, and I didn’t fully identify as gay, so instead of feeling empowered, I felt like I had to hide. It gave me a lot of anxiety. Like I was somehow behind everyone else who was out and living freely. Looking back now, I know that wasn’t true. Everyone’s journey is different, and there’s no timeline for self-acceptance.</p>

<p>Today, Pride feels completely different. It’s a powerful reminder of how far I’ve come — not just in embracing who I am, but in realizing why this month exists in the first place. It’s not just about celebration; it’s about visibility, advocacy, and honoring the people who fought for our rights. For those who don’t have the privilege or safety to be out, we raise our voices. And for those who paved the way, we continue the work louder, prouder, and together.</p>

<p><strong><strong><strong><strong>How do you bring elements of your identity into your content? Is that something intentional or more intuitive?</strong></strong></strong></strong></p>

<p>It’s mostly intuitive. I don’t force it, but my identity naturally comes through in how I tell stories, in my humor, in how I relate to my audience. Being queer is part of how I see the world, so it’s going to show up in what I create, whether I’m talking about dating, fashion, or just having a chaotic Tuesday.</p>

<p>One of my favorite LGBTQIA+ creators is<a href="https://www.instagram.com/bennydrama7/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> @bennydrama7</a>. Most people know him for his hilarious videos, but he recently created and wrote a series on Prime Video called <em>Overcompensating</em>. It’s all about the awkward and funny reality of being in the closet while starting college, something I related to on so many levels. It’s not only entertaining, but also really inspiring to see someone from our community creating, writing, and starring in their own show. That kind of representation matters.</p>

<p>The blueprint for my content has always been the legend, Bretman Rock. I’ve been watching them for as long as I can remember. They come from so little and built not just a career, but a life uplifting his family and staying true to himself the entire way. Seeing someone who’s bold, funny, a minority, and queer succeed like that gave me the courage to dream big too. His book “You're That Bi*ch: & Other Cute Lessons About Being Unapologetically Yourself” inspired me so much I can’t recommend it enough.</p>

<p>As a Gen Z kid, I actually saw a decent amount of gay representation online. I remember watching coming out stories on YouTube that helped me feel less alone and more hopeful about my own journey. But what I didn’t see enough of was representation of successful gay men — especially in fields outside of entertainment. For a long time, I carried this quiet belief that being gay might somehow hold me back. I internalized the idea that success and queerness didn’t go hand in hand. Of course, I know now that couldn’t be further from the truth. But back then, it felt like a default flaw in who I was and that’s the kind of narrative I wish had been challenged more when I was growing up.</p>

<p>As a gay content creator, I’ve noticed that some brands only reach out around Pride Month. And while I’m always grateful for those opportunities, it would mean so much more to be considered for campaigns and events throughout the year — not just in June. LGBTQIA+ voices deserve to be part of the conversation year-round, not just when it’s convenient or seasonal. Authentic inclusion is consistent, not occasional.</p>

There are so many creators out there that it may feel like it is saturated but the way to differentiate yourself is being authentic to who you are. You don’t need to have it all figured out, you just need to show up. Your perspective is valuable, even if it’s messy, even if it’s different. Don’t dim your light to fit in. There’s space for you and your voice could be the one someone else really needs to hear.</p>

Have your core (the 1-2 platforms and formats you’re heavily invested in) and then have your add-ons and amplifiers that contribute additional revenue streams. Every platform or format type doesn’t require the same level of investment but you want to be strategic and you want to have money coming in from as many places as possible.</p>

<p>Yes, I wish I started monetizing as soon as I made my first product recommendation. I left a lot of money on the table for about 2 years because I didn’t understand the power of my platform or my community. Do not be like me and don’t give away your recommendations for free because that is keeping the brand profitable, keeping your followers satisfied, but very little for you. Content is a job, doesn’t matter if it’s full-time or part-time, you are providing a service and you should be compensated for that. If you have an engaged, supportive community you can bank on the fact that they want to see you win!</p>

I take a very casual approach to linking and I collaborate deeply with my audience to reinforce recommendations so that my community knows that you’re getting a community driven recommendation, not just a Chanel recommendation. If you have followers asking you either via DMs or comments about something you are wearing or something you have featured in your content, repurpose that for your audience and throw up a link.</p>

<p>It all starts with audience preparation, your audience has to have an interest and a desire to “shop with you” and you must always be in service to their needs, it’s a reciprocal process. You also have to make it easy for them to convert which includes consistently linking, having your links readily and easily available, teaching them about where your links are housed so they know where they can find them without you (this is where storefronts / <em>Tap to Shop</em> comes in play), saving your stories with affiliate links to highlights, and leveraging automation tools like <em>Shop The Look</em> to get your audience links when they request them.</p>

<p><strong><strong>What motivated you to start sharing your life or interests online, and how has your message changed over time?</strong></strong></p>

<p>It’s always been a passion of mine to be able to make a career out of sharing my life through a camera, ever since I was in elementary school, uploading Youtube videos. Growing up, constantly moving, having my own comfort creators that were my consistency amidst turmoil and change gave me comfort, and sparked my interest to be that creator for someone else. My message to chase your dreams and lead a life with kindness and empathy at the forefront hasn’t changed, but rather me as an individual. <em>That’s one of my favorite parts. </em>I get to grow up, and learn, and evolve with my community, especially in my 20s. Change is good; our experiences shape us and is a sign of a life well lived.</p>

<p><strong><strong><strong><strong>Can you share a time when your content connected with others in the AAPI community in a meaningful way?</strong></strong></strong></strong></p>

<p>I show up, and I work hard. Especially, as a first gen daughter of two immigrant, blue collar parents, instilled in me at a young age is ambition and work ethic. I have two parents to vindicate their decades of sacrifice, by paying them back one day, and share these dreams many of us share. I’m unapologetically and proudly Korean American, sharing the blend of these two cultures in my everyday life through all my content online. I posted a TikTok on a whim of “I don’t know who needs to hear this, but...” and chatted through my experience with my hair, specifically on the frequency of washing. Online, there’s almost a stigma against washing your hair daily, instead seeing how long one can go without. I, too, tried this method, as one impressionable young woman does with beauty trends to learn that simply doesn’t work. Sharing that experience, how I initially fought my mother as a teenager, how I <strong>didn’t </strong>need to wash my hair like she says only to succumb to her sage advice years later... It was a moment that garnered a lot of discourse and agreement with the same sentiment.</p>

<p>Celebrating us only during the month of May, or coming out with generic red and gold items to market as a performative alliance with our community. Your parents may not understand at first, but if they’re anything like mine, and love you and want to watch you succeed, give them time. Social media as a career is still relatively new, and a foreign concept to understand of which can garner success and financial stability.</p>

<p>When I was younger, I remember seeing Brenda Song on Disney and having a spark that someone who could resemble me would be on TV as a main character. In high school, I had Youtubers like: Remi Ashten, Jenn Im, Sophia Chang. In this stage of life, I have Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Greta Lee, Simone Ashley. All of these women inspire me with their talent, eloquence, and courageousness representing our community so beautifully. To be honest, I’m unsure. As I personally don’t feel like I have any long-term relationships with brands, so for me, I’d just appreciate the outspoken vocalization. But always, actions do speak louder than words.</p>
